God's Thrifty Extravagance — What the Bible Says About Money

The Bible says, “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.” But it also says, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom.” The Bible’s instructions about money often seem contradictory. So what should we do? Kopke explores the seeming contradictory ideas regarding money and demonstrates that these dynamic paradoxes actually reveal God’s truth to us. God's Thrifty Extravagance encourages readers to reexamine their financial habits to survive tough economic times, helps them prepare for major life transitions, and shows how to learn to use God’s blessing of money.

What Others Are Saying

Average Rating

Truthfully, I ordered this book to complete an order that would allow me free shipping. In fact, I consider buying anything for such a reason completely extravagant. However, I also felt the Lord was prompting me to be more money-conscious. I received the book two weeks ago, placed it on the nightstand in case insomnia prompted me to read it. I brought it to work today knowing I'd have spare time to read something. But I'd also brought another book which I intended to read first. Let me tell you that from the first word I couldn't put the book down. Not only am I learning about good, true stewardship, I am learning so much about the perfect, beautiful nature of God and His deep love and care for me. And I'm learning all this great stuff while absolutely LAUGHING OUT LOUD at the witty writing of this wonderful, very bright author. If any other books come out by him, I'll definitely buy them. I am enjoying this book so much I intend to order several as Christmas gifts, especially for my Christian physician whose personality so closely resembles Jon Kopke's. I know he will love it. Looking forward to more books by this fine author... T. S., Wood Ridge, NJ

A book that is easy to read and easy to understand. . . Jon has done a thorough job researching the scriptures and resolving the many paradoxes of such things as: distribution of wealth, sharing with others, supporting one’s church, and the pitfalls of abusing the power of one’s money. Jon Kopke’s narrative reminds us all that everything ultimately belongs to God. Luke 12:48: “When someone has been given much, much will be required in return” (NLT). B. H., Brookville, Indiana

God's Thrifty Extravagance is one of the best biblical money management books I've read in a long time. Witty and wise, Jonathan Kopke will make you laugh out loud as he skillfully guides you through God's many seemingly paradoxical teachings on money. I've been studying and teaching about this topic for a long time, but this book gave me many fresh and helpful new insights into God's timeless financial truths. I highly recommend it. – Matt Bell, Personal Finance Writer/Speaker

In a wonderfully entertaining style and with deep theological insights, Jon Kopke challenges both our understanding and our living out of the stewardship responsibility that God expects of each of us. He makes an important contribution to the growing awareness that our relationship to our money has a great deal to do with our relationship to God. This book makes for excellent personal reading and for great small group discussion. – Dr. Richard Towner, Good $ense Ministry
